The S4R SolidScan™ B Series is an ultra-compact two-electrode compression cell developed for solid-state battery research, solid-electrolyte testing, interface characterization, impedance measurements, and electrochemical cycling.

Available in Ø8, Ø10, and Ø12 mm configurations, the cell combines a compact 40 × 40 × 38 mm format, opposed compression pistons, PEEK electrical insulation, and replaceable static FKM seals. Its fully disassemblable construction facilitates sample loading, cleaning, maintenance, and routine operation inside a glovebox.

Two versions are available: SolidScan™ B, designed for routine laboratory research, and SolidScan™ BP, the premium configuration featuring hardened SS410 components and a dedicated nickel contact interface for intensive use and advanced characterization. Depending on the selected diameter and external press capacity, the cell supports nominal sample pressures of up to 400 MPa.

Solid-State Battery Test Cell

S4R SolidScan™ B Series

Ultra-Compact Compression Cell for Solid-State Battery Research

The S4R SolidScan™ B Series is a family of compact two-electrode compression cells developed for the investigation of solid electrolytes, electrode materials, electrochemical interfaces, and complete solid-state battery assemblies.

Available in the standard SolidScan™ B configuration and the SolidScan™ BP configuration with nickel-coated contact surfaces, the series combines a compact 40 × 40 × 38 mm footprint, a nominal mass of only 325 g, opposed compression pistons, PEEK electrical insulation, and an airtight static sealing system.

Product Highlights

A compact platform for solid-state battery research

Designed to streamline sample preparation, mechanical assembly, electrochemical testing, and routine cleaning.

01
Ultra-Compact and Lightweight
A 40 × 40 × 38 mm footprint and 325 g nominal mass minimize glovebox space and facilitate handling, storage, and transfer.
02
High-Pressure Sample Preparation
An external laboratory press can apply a nominal pressure of up to 400 MPa during the sample-preparation stage.
03
Tested Airtight Construction
Two static FKM seals provide an airtight closure when the cell is correctly assembled.
04
Standard or Nickel-Coated Contact
Choose hard-chromium-coated piston contact with the SolidScan™ B or nickel-coated piston contact surfaces with the SolidScan™ BP.
01
Cell Architecture

Opposed two-piston compression system

The electrochemical stack is positioned between upper and lower compression pistons. During sample preparation, an external laboratory press may be used to apply the required compaction force.

After assembly, the cell screws establish and retain the mechanical preload applied to the electrochemical stack during testing. The cell does not include integrated force measurement or pressure monitoring.

Different stack thicknesses can be accommodated within the mechanical closing range of the selected configuration. Compatibility with unusually thick or complex assemblies can be reviewed upon request.

1
Load the electrochemical stack
Position the solid electrolyte, electrodes, and selected contact interfaces.
2
Assemble and seal
Install the pistons, PEEK insulation components, static FKM seals, and fastening elements.
3
Apply preparatory pressure and connect
Use a suitably rated external press when required, tighten the cell screws, and connect the cell to the electrochemical measurement system.
Available Configurations

SolidScan™ B or SolidScan™ BP

Both versions share the same compact geometry, hardened stainless steel 410 construction, PEEK insulation, hard chromium surface treatment, and airtight sealing principle.

Feature SolidScan™ B SolidScan™ BP
Configuration Standard Nickel-coated contact
Metallic Construction Hardened stainless steel 410 Hardened stainless steel 410
Surface Treatment 10 µm nominal hard chromium coating 10 µm nominal hard chromium coating
Electrochemical Interface Hard-chromium-coated piston surfaces Nickel-coated piston contact surfaces
Sample Diameters Ø8, Ø10, and Ø12 mm Ø8, Ø10, and Ø12 mm
Construction Fully disassemblable Fully disassemblable
Nickel-coated contact interface
The SolidScan™ BP features a nickel coating deposited directly on the piston contact surfaces, providing a dedicated nickel electrochemical interface while preserving the same mechanical architecture as the SolidScan™ B. Compatibility with the selected electrochemical system should be considered when choosing this configuration.
02
Mechanical Construction

Hardened stainless steel 410 with hard chromium protection

The metallic structure and compression pistons of both versions are manufactured from hardened stainless steel 410 to support the axial loads generated during sample preparation and assembly.

A nominal 10 µm hard chromium coating is applied over the hardened stainless steel to improve surface hardness and resistance to wear during repeated assembly and compression operations.

In the SolidScan™ B, the hard-chromium-coated piston surfaces provide the direct electrochemical contact interface. In the SolidScan™ BP, a nickel coating is deposited on the piston contact surfaces to provide a dedicated nickel interface.

03
Airtight Sealing System

Two static FKM seals

The cell uses two static FKM seals to provide an airtight closure when correctly assembled. The seals remain stationary throughout electrochemical testing.

Seal Material
FKM
Hardness
70 Shore A
Seal Quantity
2 per cell
Tested airtight construction
The airtight design has been tested and validated. The sealing system is independent of the mechanical preload applied to the electrochemical stack.
Preparatory Pressure

Select the external press according to sample diameter

During sample preparation, nominal pressure is calculated from the force applied by the external press and the nominal compressed area of the sample.

Model Size Sample Diameter Nominal Compressed Area Force at 400 MPa Approximate Load
08 8 mm 50.27 mm² 20.1 kN 2.05 tf
10 10 mm 78.54 mm² 31.4 kN 3.20 tf
12 12 mm 113.10 mm² 45.2 kN 4.61 tf
Nominal Pressure = Applied Force / Nominal Compressed Area
The external press must be selected with an appropriate safety margin. The maximum nominal pressure of 400 MPa applies exclusively to the sample-preparation stage. During electrochemical testing, the cell screws retain the mechanical preload applied to the stack; the cell does not directly measure force or pressure during operation.
Optional torque wrench
An optional torque wrench supports repeatable screw tightening between successive assemblies. It provides a reproducible tightening torque but does not constitute a direct measurement of sample pressure.
