Two-Electrode Stainless Steel Electrochemical Cell

Controlled two-electrode testing in a robust stainless steel architecture

Designed for advanced electrochemical research, this two-electrode cell combines an original 316 stainless steel body with two independently accessible metallic contacts, adjustable mechanical compression and direct potentiostat connection.

Its two-contact architecture supports the two electrode connections while retaining a compact, fully disassemblable construction for convenient installation, cleaning and repeated laboratory use.

Cell Body

Original 316 stainless steel construction

The cell is built around an original 316 stainless steel body with two sealed electrode ports and Swagelok compression components. PFA offers excellent chemical inertness for demanding electrochemical environments.

The body can be fully disassembled for sample installation, cleaning and replacement of internal components. As the body is electrically conductive, electrical isolation must be maintained between the standard plungers and the body.

Electrode Contacts

Two independently accessible electrode contacts

The cell provides two independent metallic contacts corresponding to the two cell electrodes. In the standard configuration, insulating films must be positioned between each plunger and the conductive stainless steel body.

Internal Compression

Spring-loaded compression and stack adjustment

The internal spring applies mechanical preload to the electrochemical stack and helps maintain contact between the opposed electrodes, separator and metallic contact surfaces.

Removable spacers allow the main compression assembly to be adjusted according to the thickness of the selected electrode stack.

Sealing System

PTFE compression ferrule sealing

The two electrode ports use 316 Stainless Steel compression nuts and ferrule assemblies. Tightening each nut compresses its ferrule around the corresponding metallic contact to create a secure mechanical seal.

Tighten each nut to compress the corresponding PTFE ferrule.

Secure the assembly
All three sealed ports remain accessible for adjustment and disassembly.

Electrical Insulation

0.05 mm Mylar insulation films

The conductive stainless steel body must be electrically isolated from standard metallic plungers. Thin Mylar films, also known as PET or polyester electrical-insulation films, are installed between the plungers and the cell body.

The required film thickness is 0.05 mm. Correct placement is necessary to prevent unintended electrical contact while preserving the compact geometry of the assembly. The Mylar films are not supplied with the standard cell.
