Sulfurized Polyacrylonitrile (SPAN) is an advanced cathode material designed for lithium–sulfur (Li–S) battery research, offering improved electrochemical stability compared to conventional sulfur-based cathodes.
SPAN is synthesized by thermally treating polyacrylonitrile (PAN) with elemental sulfur at elevated temperatures (typically 300–450 °C). This process chemically grafts sulfur onto a conductive polymer backbone, effectively suppressing the formation of soluble polysulfides. As a result, SPAN enables stable cycling behavior and compatibility with standard carbonate electrolytes, similar to those used in conventional Li-ion batteries.
With a reversible capacity significantly higher than typical NMC cathodes and excellent first-cycle efficiency, SPAN is particularly suitable for laboratory studies focused on next-generation Li–S battery systems, degradation mechanisms, and cathode material optimization.
